The owners moved a few of the cabins seen from the original site and others were added. An addition was also added to the main structure to allow extra dining area and two more second floor bedrooms and a bath, as well as a first floor kitchen area for the restaurant, which became The Commodore Inn. Route 20, being the main east to west road in New York at the time, allowed the business to prosper and grow. Additional stucco cabins were added in the 1950's on the east side of the property and an in-ground pool was installed to the right of the building. Known for its fine dining, it was a hit with the locals, as well as the travelling public. The New York Thruway was built in the 1960's and started the demise of businesses on the Route 20  corridor, as it became the new and faster route for traffic travelling east to west. all along Route 20 shadows of a storied, more prosperous past can be seen, but few remain as intact as The Commodore. The property was bought by David Hall, who grew up in Sharon Springs but had lived in Houston Texas for 22 years, after 43 years of near inactivity. One of the first visitors was an employee of the New York State Historical Department, who happened to see activity and decided to stop. He said that this was one of the last standing examples of a motoring, roadside inn and was hoping the new owners would restore it. He was reassured that this was indeed the plan! With the help of his brother Mark, a building contractor, David has worked at the slow  process, after decades of neglect, to resurrect The Commodore into not only a home, but a business location for Kim's Main Street Salon and retail store and now have begun the transformation and invite all to The Commodore Weekend Events. Feel the past re-purposed for today with our soon to open Artisan  Fair and Flea Market open all summer. We will soon have a food venue open for all to enjoy. More attractions are planned for the future so please stop in and see the progress and enjoy our new endeavor.

About Us

The Commodore started out in the 1800's on Chestnut Street in Sharon Springs as a home and grocery store. In the 1930's it was uprooted, placed on huge flatbed trucks and made an entertaining ride down Sawmill Road to 428 State Route 20, its present location today (the overhead photo on the home page was taken a few years after the move).
